Description

Mount Washington (1,917 m / 6,288 ft) is the highest peak in the northeastern United States and the most topographically prominent mountain east of the Mississippi River. Rising in the Presidential Range of New Hampshire's White Mountains, it is notorious for brutal weather: the summit's Mount Washington Observatory recorded a wind speed of 372 km/h (231 mph) in April 1934 — a world record until 1996 and still the highest ever measured outside a tornado or tropical cyclone. Although the trails are non-technical in summer, the mix of altitude, wind and sudden weather makes it dangerous year-round. Hikers reach the top by several approaches — the iconic Tuckerman Ravine Trail, Lion Head, the Ammonoosuc Ravine–Jewell loop, and the Appalachian Trail which crosses the summit. The top is also served by the Mount Washington Cog Railway (west) and the Auto Road (east), so it is often crowded. Backcountry skiing in Tuckerman Ravine and annual running and cycling races to the summit round out its activities.
