Description
Mount Rungwe is a now-dormant stratovolcano rising to about 2,960–2,981 m, one of the highest summits of Tanzania's Southern Highlands near the town of Tukuyu in Mbeya Region. It stands at the junction of the eastern and western arms of the East African Rift, at the north-western end of the Lake Malawi/Nyasa basin; its last eruption is estimated at roughly 1,200 years ago. Its slopes are protected as the Mount Rungwe Nature Forest Reserve (about 13,652 ha) and hold exceptional biodiversity — evergreen montane forest, a bamboo belt, and summit grassland. The area is famous as home of the Kipunji (Rungwecebus kipunji), the first new African monkey genus described in over 80 years (found on Rungwe's slopes in 2003–2005 and now critically endangered), plus the Rungwe dwarf galago and more than 200 bird species. The climb is usually a single long day from Tukuyu or a reserve ranger post (e.g. Syakula), ascending through tropical rainforest and bamboo before the summit, with views toward the Kipengere/Livingstone Mountains and Lake Nyasa.

SourceClimbing Experiences
Mount Rungwe (about 2,960–2,981 m) is usually done as a single-day climb from the town of Tukuyu or a ranger post in the Mount Rungwe Nature Forest Reserve (e.g. Syakula), after arranging permits and a guide. The trail gains roughly 1,300–1,500 m through tropical rainforest and a bamboo belt — often overgrown and faint, so a guide is required — before reaching a summit with views to the Kipengere/Livingstone Mountains and Lake Nyasa. The area is also famous as habitat of the rare Kipunji monkey. The sources below include climbing vlogs, short conservation films, a personal trip report, and operator guides.
