Description
Mount Ciremai is an active stratovolcano at 3,078 metres, the highest peak in West Java Province. It straddles the border of Kuningan and Majalengka regencies and is protected as Gunung Ciremai National Park (TNGC), designated in 2004. Three official trails serve the mountain: Palutungan (Kuningan), the most popular with the best facilities; Apuy (Majalengka), drier, longer, and quieter; and Linggajati (Kuningan), the oldest and most historically significant route. The summit holds a double crater—the larger Kawah Burung and a smaller companion—with mild fumarolic activity. Ciremai carries deep cultural meaning for the Sundanese communities of Kuningan and Cirebon, traditionally regarded as a sacred and revered mountain. As West Java's highest peak, it is considered one of the most prestigious summits in Java.
