Description

Gunung Kelatakan — also spelled Gunung Klatakan — at about 698–703 m is one of the best-known peaks inside West Bali National Park (Taman Nasional Bali Barat), at the western tip of Bali (Jembrana and Buleleng regencies). Together with Gunung Sangiang (about 1,002 m, the park's highest point), Gunung Banyuwedang and Gunung Prapat Agung, it is one of the main mountains of this roughly 19,003-hectare conservation area. Though relatively low, the climb is demanding: the Gunung Klatakan trail cuts through tropical rainforest and can take around eight hours, leading hikers into habitat of sambar deer, muntjac, Java buffalo, and offering a chance to spot the Bali starling (Leucopsar rothschildi) — the critically endangered bird endemic to Bali that is the park's foremost conservation priority. Because of the demanding terrain and the need to protect wildlife, visitors are required to hire an official park guide and follow park rules. West Bali National Park itself protects a mosaic of ecosystems from mangroves, coral reefs and coastal forest to lowland forest and savanna.
