Description
Gunung Abang is the highest point on the eastern rim of the Batur Caldera and Bali's third-highest peak at 2,152 metres. Located in Kintamani district, Bangli Regency, it represents a remnant wall of the massive proto-volcano that collapsed thousands of years ago to form the present caldera. Now considered dormant, its last recorded eruption was in 1968. The round trip of roughly 14 kilometres through dense tropical forest takes five to six hours; trail markings are sparse compared to Bali's busier peaks, so a local guide is strongly recommended. The summit rewards climbers with sweeping views over Lake Batur, the caldera floor, and distant Mount Agung. Those seeking a quieter alternative to Bali's more crowded volcanoes will find Gunung Abang a rewarding and relatively unspoiled destination.
