Description
Glittertind (Glittertinden; 2,465 m including its summit ice cap) is the second-highest mountain in Norway and in Northern Europe, surpassed only by nearby Galdhøpiggen in the Jotunheimen mountains. Its hallmark is the permanent Glitterbreen ice cap crowning the summit; historically this ice made Glittertind reckoned higher than Galdhøpiggen, though glacier melt has since changed the exact figure (the rock summit sits around 2,452 m). Unlike the technical Alpine peaks, Glittertind is a non-technical high-mountain walk hugely popular with Norwegian and international hikers. The two main starting points are Spiterstulen (from the west/south, a rocky glacier-free route) and Glitterheim (from the east, the classic line crossing the snowy Glitterbreen glacier to the summit ridge). Though it demands no climbing technique, the mountain is still serious: Jotunheimen weather can change dramatically within minutes, and the broad, flat ice-capped summit can be disorienting in fog. The summit panorama takes in Galdhøpiggen, Besshøe and a sea of Jotunheimen peaks.

Routes
Jalur dari Spiterstulen (barat) — jalur batu tanpa gletser
Menengah; hiking gunung tinggi non-teknis, panjang dan terpapar cuaca, tanpa penyeberangan gletserThe most popular and most accessible route up Glittertind. Starting from the DNT lodge Spiterstulen (~1,100 m) in Visdalen, a marked trail climbs through slopes and rocky ridges to the summit, generally without crossing the snowy glacier. Round-trip is about 5–7 hours with over 1,300 m of ascent. Though non-technical, the route is long and highly exposed to Jotunheimen's fast-changing weather; hikers are advised to carry map, compass/GPS and warm clothing even in summer. The broad, flat ice-capped summit can be disorienting in fog.

Jalur klasik dari Glitterheim (timur) via gletser Glitterbreen
Menengah–menantang; menyeberangi gletser bersalju Glitterbreen, butuh kewaspadaan celahThe historic and most iconic line to the Glittertind summit. From the DNT lodge Glitterheim on the east side, the route ascends and then crosses the snowy Glitterbreen glacier before gaining the ice-capped summit ridge. Because it crosses a glacier, this route is more demanding than the Spiterstulen line — in snowy conditions roped travel and caution over hidden crevasses are advised. This is the route that traditionally underlines Glittertind's character as an 'ice-capped' peak. Round-trip is about 6–8 hours depending on snow and weather.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Climbing Glittertind is a long but very rewarding non-technical high-mountain walk, and one of the most popular tours in Jotunheimen. The two main bases are Spiterstulen and Glitterheim (both DNT lodges). From Spiterstulen the route climbs a glacier-free rocky ridge and typically takes 5–7 hours round-trip; from Glitterheim the classic line crosses the snowy Glitterbreen glacier before gaining the summit ridge. Hikers repeatedly highlight two things: the beauty of the unique ice-capped summit, and how fast Jotunheimen weather changes — many reach the top in thick fog with no view, then descend as the sky suddenly clears. On the broad, flat summit poor visibility can be disorienting, so many advise carrying map, compass/GPS and warm clothing even in summer. For those lucky with clear weather, the panorama of Galdhøpiggen and a sea of Jotunheimen peaks is the main reward.
