Description
Carstensz Timur (East Carstensz Peak, about 4,820 m — some sources cite 4,808 m) is one of the four main summits of the Carstensz massif in the Sudirman Range of Central Papua, alongside Puncak Jaya (Carstensz Pyramid), Ngga Pulu and Sumantri. In 1936 it was still ice-capped and was climbed by the Dutch expedition team of Anton Colijn, Jean Jacques Dozy and Frits Wissel on 5 December 1936, together with Ngga Pulu. Its glacier has since retreated, so the ascent is now a climb over loose, exposed limestone that has seen only a handful of ascents — with no cairns or signs of previous climbers. Carstensz Timur is usually climbed as an additional summit during a Puncak Jaya expedition and requires a restricted-area Papua permit.

Routes
Carstensz Base Camp → Punggungan Carstensz Timur (puncak tambahan ekspedisi Carstensz)
Sangat berat — pemanjatan batu kapur lepas dan terekspos, jarang didaki, izin khususCarstensz Timur is climbed as an added summit from Carstensz Base Camp (~4,300 m), reached by helicopter from Timika or a long trek. From base camp teams move to the eastern side of the massif and follow the summit ridge. With the glacier gone, the route is now a climb over loose, exposed limestone — with no cairns or signs of previous ascents, so route-finding and rope protection are critical. It is usually combined with Puncak Jaya and Ngga Pulu in a single expedition. Equatorial weather changes quickly; a restricted-area Papua permit and an authorized operator are required.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Carstensz Timur (East Carstensz Peak) is the least-frequented summit of the Carstensz massif. Climbing sources agree that, since its glacier retreated, the summit route is now a climb over loose, exposed limestone with no cairns or signs of previous climbers, demanding extra care along the ridge. It is virtually always climbed as part of a Puncak Jaya (Carstensz Pyramid) expedition, often in sequence with Ngga Pulu, from Carstensz Base Camp (~4,300 m). Its history stands out: in 1936 this then-ice-capped peak was climbed by a Dutch team together with Ngga Pulu, long before the bare Carstensz Pyramid was finally summited in 1962. A restricted-area Papua permit and an authorized operator are mandatory.
