Description

Akita-Komagatake (秋田駒ヶ岳, 1,637 m) is an active volcano on the border of Akita and Iwate prefectures, about 10 km east of Lake Tazawa. It is the highest mountain in Akita Prefecture and the second highest in Towada-Hachimantai National Park. Rather than a single cone it is a cluster of peaks (Odake, the high point, with Medake and Nyotodake) ringing a crater plateau. Its main draw is one of Japan's richest alpine flower fields: in early summer the slopes fill with komakusa, chinguruma and dozens of other mountain flowers. A valley on the south-east side of Medake, officially Baba-no-Kōji, is popularly nicknamed the 'Moomin Valley' for its fairy-tale scenery when the chinguruma bloom. Easy bus access to the eighth station (Hachigome) makes it a favourite of beginners and flower lovers alike, with views toward Lake Tazawa and Mount Iwate.

Routes

Hachigome (stasiun ke-8) → Odake (puncak) — lingkar puncak

Mudah–sedang
+340 m ±3–4 jam pulang-pergi / lingkar

The standard and shortest route. A seasonal bus reaches the Hachigome trailhead at about 1,300 m; from there hikers climb to the crater plateau and circle the peaks of Odake (high point, 1,637 m), Medake and Nyotodake. Net ascent is modest, making it popular with beginners, with views to Lake Tazawa and alpine flower fields along the way in early summer.

Lingkar 'Lembah Moomin' (Baba-no-Kōji) via Medake

Sedang
±4–5 jam lingkar

The most sought-after loop variation in flower season: from the summit area it drops into the Baba-no-Kōji valley on the south-east side of Medake — nicknamed the 'Moomin Valley' — where chinguruma bloom in a white carpet in early summer, then returns along the crater rim. It involves a little more up-and-down than the standard route but delivers the mountain's most iconic alpine-flower scenery.

Climbing Experiences

Almost every account of Akita-Komagatake centres on its flowers: the mountain is regarded as one of Japan's finest alpine flower fields. Vlogs and trip reports highlight the seasonal bus to the eighth station (Hachigome), the summit circuit over Odake–Medake–Nyotodake, and above all the 'Moomin Valley' (Baba-no-Kōji) carpeted with chinguruma in early summer. Other themes are its beginner-friendly access, the views over Lake Tazawa, and the autumn foliage.
