Description
The Valley of Flowers Trek is a 6–8 day journey in Chamoli, Uttarakhand, leading to one of India's most spectacular alpine valleys — a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed with Nanda Devi National Park in 1988) covering 87 km² and bursting with over 600 species of wildflowers during the July–September monsoon season. Starting from Govindghat on the Badrinath highway, the trail ascends 14 km to the mountain village of Ghangaria (3,050 m), the main base camp. From there, one trail leads into the Valley of Flowers (3,352–3,658 m), while another climbs 6 km to Hemkund Sahib (4,329 m), the world's highest Gurudwara, perched beside a pristine glacial lake. Iconic blooms include Brahma Kamal (Uttarakhand's state flower), the rare Himalayan Blue Poppy, Cobra Lily, and Primula, while the surrounding forests shelter snow leopards, Asian black bears, and musk deer. Entry permits must be obtained at the forest check post in Ghangaria.
Trail Highlights
More than 600 species of endemic Himalayan flowers including the Brahma Kamal (the official flower of Uttarakhand) and the rare Himalayan Blue Poppy, Hemkund Sahib — the highest Sikh Gurudwara in the world (4,329 m) on the shore of a glacial lake, a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Nanda Devi National Park (designated 1988), rare fauna including the snow leopard and musk deer, and dense rhododendron forest along the trail to Ghangaria
