Description

The Timberline Trail (#600) is a ~40.7-mile (66 km) loop that fully circumnavigates Mount Hood, Oregon's highest peak at 11,250 ft (3,429 m), entirely within Mount Hood National Forest. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, it is usually completed in 3–5 days with roughly 9,000 ft (2,700 m) of cumulative climbing, crossing old-growth forest, subalpine wildflower meadows, active glacier margins, and rocky ridgelines. Its crux is not the elevation but the unbridged glacier-fed river crossings — chiefly the Sandy River and the Eliot Creek washout — which run high and silty and are safest forded in the early morning when flows are lowest. The trail shares about 11 miles with the Pacific Crest Trail and is regarded as one of the most iconic volcano-circling loops in the Pacific Northwest.

Trail Highlights
