Description
Simien Mountains National Park in northern Ethiopia is one of Africa's most dramatic trekking landscapes — an ancient basalt massif eroded into sheer cliffs dropping up to 1,500 m into deep gorges. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978, the park shelters three rare endemic species: the gelada baboon (Ethiopia's unique red-chested primate), the walia ibex (endemic cliff-dwelling goat), and the critically endangered Ethiopian wolf. The popular 3–7-day circuit from Sankaber via Geech to Chenek Camp follows the escarpment rim with sweeping gorge views and near-certain encounters with gelada herds. Ambitious trekkers extend to 8–10 days to summit Ras Dashen (4,543 m), Ethiopia's highest peak and fourth in Africa.
Trail Highlights
Troops of gelada baboons (a primate endemic to Ethiopia with a distinctive red chest), walia ibex (an endangered endemic mountain goat), the Ethiopian wolf (one of the world's most endangered canids), the summit of Ras Dashen at 4,543 m (the highest peak in Ethiopia), the escarpment cliffs of Imet Gogo (3,926 m) with views into a gorge 1,500 m deep, and UNESCO World Heritage status
