Description

Selvaggio Blu is a ~45 km coastal traverse along the Gulf of Orosei in Sardinia, Italy, running from Pedra Longa to Cala Sisine in the Baunei area and widely regarded as the hardest trek in Italy — often cited among the toughest in Europe. Conceived in 1987 by photographer-alpinist Mario Verin and architect Peppino Cicalò, the route strings together ancient shepherd and charcoal-burner paths high above sea cliffs of limestone. Although its maximum elevation is only around 770 m, the difficulty comes from a mix of hiking, graded climbing, and abseils (rappels) up to ~45 m along its technical stages, compounded by the absence of water sources and unmarked terrain that demands self-navigation. It is typically completed in 4–7 days with bivouacs, and nearly all hikers hire a certified guide and carry or cache water; the best windows are May–June and September–October.
