Description

The Rakiura Track is one of New Zealand's ten Great Walks — a 32 km loop through Rakiura National Park on Stewart Island, the country's southernmost island. Usually walked over 3 days, it runs from Lee Bay (5 km north of Oban) to Fern Gully (2 km west of Oban), following the coastline past small inlets, wide bays and tidal mudflats before crossing bush-clad hills in its central section. As one of the most achievable Great Walks, with well-spaced DOC huts at Port William and North Arm, it suits walkers of most fitness levels. Stewart Island/Rakiura is one of the best places in the world to see wild kiwi (southern brown kiwi/tokoeka), making the track a distinctively New Zealand coastal and wildlife experience. Hut and campsite bookings are essential during the Great Walks season.

Trail Highlights
