Description
The Peaks of the Balkans Trail is a 192 km circular route crossing Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro through the heart of the Prokletije Mountains — known in Albanian as Bjeshkët e Namuna, or the 'Accursed Mountains'. Typically completed in 10 days starting from the village of Theth in northern Albania, the trail traverses high alpine meadows, dramatic valleys, and remote mountain villages preserving centuries-old Balkan pastoral culture. Elevation ranges from 670 m to 2,290 m with a cumulative gain of approximately 12,000 m, making it physically demanding without requiring technical climbing skills. The best season is June to September when the trail is snow-free and guesthouses along the route are open.
