Description
The Pacific Northwest Trail (PNT) is an approximately 1,200-mile route linking the Continental Divide in Montana with Cape Alava on Washington's Pacific coast. This east-west trail crosses Idaho and a range of protected landscapes, including Glacier National Park, the Selkirk Mountains, the North Cascades, and the Olympic Peninsula; it was designated a National Scenic Trail in 2009. A through-hike commonly takes about two months or longer and involves remote terrain, demanding navigation, river crossings, bears, and rapidly changing weather. The main thru-hiking window is generally July through September, while backcountry permits must be arranged separately for the national parks along the route.
Trail Highlights
