Description
Offa's Dyke Path (Welsh: Llwybr Clawdd Offa) is a 285 km (177-mile) long-distance footpath loosely following the Wales–England border, and one of Britain's National Trails. Officially opened on 10 July 1971 by Lord Hunt, roughly 97 km of it follows or runs close to the remains of Offa's Dyke, an earthwork traditionally attributed to King Offa of Mercia in the late 8th century. Walked south to north, it starts at Sedbury on the Severn estuary near Chepstow and ends at Prestatyn on the north coast, taking an average walker about 12 days. The landscape shifts constantly: the riverside meadows of the Wye and Severn, the eastern edge of the Black Mountains where Hatterrall Ridge marks the high point at 703 m, Clun Forest, the Eglwyseg moors above Llangollen, and finally the Clwydian Range. The route crosses the England–Wales border more than 20 times and passes towns including Monmouth, Hay-on-Wye, Knighton — home of the Offa's Dyke Centre at the trail's halfway point — Montgomery and Llangollen.
Trail Highlights
