Description

The Mestia to Ushguli trek is the best-known hiking route in Upper Svaneti, a Greater Caucasus mountain region in northwestern Georgia. The roughly 58 km trail is usually walked over 3–4 days, linking the town of Mestia with Ushguli via the villages of Zhabeshi, Adishi, and Iprali and crossing the Chkhunderi Pass (~2,720 m). Along the way hikers pass the distinctive Svan defensive stone towers, the Adishi Glacier with its glacial river crossing, and views of Shkhara, Ushba, and Tetnuldi. Ushguli, one of Europe's highest continuously inhabited settlements (~2,100 m) and part of the UNESCO 'Upper Svaneti' World Heritage Site, is the iconic finish; village guesthouses along the route mean no special permit is required.
