Description
The Long Trail is a ~439 km (273-mile) long-distance footpath running the entire length of Vermont, USA, from the Massachusetts state line in the south to the Canadian border in the north, following the main ridge of the Green Mountains. Built by the Green Mountain Club between 1910 and 1930, it is the oldest long-distance trail in the United States and served as the inspiration for the Appalachian Trail — the two even coincide for roughly 160 km in the southern section. The route crosses Vermont's iconic summits including Mount Mansfield (1,339 m, the state high point), Camel's Hump, and Killington Peak, over muddy, rocky, root-laced terrain that is physically demanding. A full thru-hike typically takes 20–35 days, with nights spent in a network of volunteer-maintained shelters and campsites, best attempted from late summer into fall.
