Description
The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is Nepal's most remote major trekking route, leading to both the North Base Camp at Pangpema (5,143 m) and the South Base Camp at Oktang (4,730 m) beneath the world's third-highest peak (8,586 m), which sits at the triple border of Nepal, India (Sikkim), and Tibet. The full circuit of approximately 210 km takes 18–26 days, crossing dense Himalayan forests, Tibeto-Buddhist villages such as Ghunsa, high passes including Sinion La (4,646 m), and dramatic glacial valleys in far-eastern Nepal. The region lies within a restricted conservation area, requiring two mandatory permits obtainable only through a registered Nepalese trekking agency; solo trekking is prohibited. Compared with the Everest or Annapurna regions, Kanchenjunga sees only a fraction of the visitor traffic, offering an authenticity and solitude that is increasingly rare in Himalayan trekking.
