Description
The K2 Base Camp trek via the Baltoro Glacier is one of the most awe-inspiring trekking adventures on earth — a deep expedition into Pakistan's Karakoram Range, where six of the world's fourteen eight-thousanders stand together. From the last village of Askole (~3,050 m), hikers walk 7–8 days through the grand Braldu Valley and across the 63 km Baltoro Glacier, passing historic camps — Jhola, Paiju, Urdukas, Goro II — before arriving at Concordia (4,691 m), the 'Throne Room of the Mountain Gods.' Here, a 360° panorama unfolds: K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I & II, Trango Towers, Lobsang Spire, and Cathedral Peaks all visible at once. Two hours more brings trekkers to K2 Base Camp (5,150 m) on the Godwin-Austen Glacier, face-to-face with the south wall of the 'Savage Mountain.' With no permanent huts on the route, every expedition relies on a caravan of traditional Balti porters who have served Karakoram expeditions since the early 20th century.
Trail Highlights
The Baltoro Glacier (63 km, the world's 5th longest non-polar glacier), Concordia (4,691 m) — the junction of the Baltoro, Abruzzi, and Godwin-Austen Glaciers surrounded by more than 60 peaks above 6,000 m, the K2 South Face (8,611 m) up close, the Trango Towers (the world's tallest vertical granite walls), the Cathedral Peaks, Broad Peak (8,051 m), Gasherbrum I & II, Lobsang Spire, and the moving Gilkey Memorial — a tribute to the climbers who died on K2.
