Description

The Walker's Haute Route is a legendary 180 km high-level traverse through the French and Swiss Alps, linking Chamonix at the foot of Mont Blanc to Zermatt beneath the iconic Matterhorn. First charted by British Alpine Club members in 1861 and now widely regarded as one of the world's top ten long-distance walks, the route crosses 11 high mountain passes in 10–14 days, weaving through glacier-carved valleys, alpine meadows, and traditional Franco-Swiss villages such as Champex-Lac, Verbier, and Arolla. It passes within sight of 10 of the 12 highest peaks in the Alps and demands significantly more fitness than the Tour du Mont Blanc, with a cumulative ascent of up to 15,000 m. No permit is required, but mountain hut reservations are essential and fill quickly in peak season.
