Description
The GR5 — Grande Traversée des Alpes is the most famous long-distance crossing of the French Alps, running roughly 600 km from Lake Geneva (Thonon-les-Bains or St-Gingolph) to Nice on the Mediterranean. It is typically completed in 28–40 days, passing the Mont Blanc area and the Vanoise, Queyras, and Mercantour national/regional parks, with nights spent in a network of refuges and gîtes. Hikers cross numerous high passes; the popular high point is the Col de Chavière (2,796 m) via the Vanoise GR55 variant. The best season is mid-June to September, when snow has cleared and mountain accommodation is open; this section of the GR5 also forms part of the European E2 path.
