Description
The Goechala Trek is an 8–10 day loop through Kangchendzonga National Park in West Sikkim, culminating at Goecha La Pass (4,940 m)—one of the world's finest vantage points for Kangchenjunga, the third-highest mountain on Earth, visible at just 13 km. The 73 km circuit starts and ends in the traditional village of Yuksom (1,780 m), climbing through dense rhododendron and magnolia forests, crossing the high alpine Dzongri ridge (4,020 m), and passing the mirror-still Samiti Lake before the final ascent to Goecha La Viewpoint 1. Spring (April–May) brings blazing rhododendron blooms; post-monsoon autumn (October–November) offers crystalline skies and sharp Himalayan panoramas. Since 2017, trekkers are restricted from proceeding beyond Viewpoint 1 to protect snow leopard habitat. A Restricted Area Permit is mandatory for foreign nationals.
Trail Highlights
Panoramas of Kangchenjunga (8,586 m, the world's third highest mountain) from Goecha La Pass (4,940 m) at a distance of 13 km, red rhododendron forests blooming in spring, the alpine meadows of Dzongri Ridge (4,020 m), and Samiti Lake reflecting the Himalayan peaks
