Description

Fimmvörðuháls is one of Iceland's most celebrated hikes—crossing a 1,000-metre-plus mountain pass between the twin glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull, from the thundering Skógafoss waterfall at Skógar down to the green valley of Þórsmörk. Over roughly 25 km the trail follows the Skógá River past dozens of tiered waterfalls before climbing onto a volcanic plateau, passing the twin craters Magni and Móði born of the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption and their fresh lava fields. Many hikers complete it in one long day (8–12 hours), though two mountain huts allow an overnight on the route. Iceland's highland weather can turn violently—rain, fog, wind, even summer snow—so proper gear and experience matter. The trail is often linked with the Laugavegur for a 4–6 day traverse through the heart of Iceland's highlands.

Trail Highlights
