Description
The Colca Canyon Trek descends into the Cañón del Colca in southern Peru, about 160 km northwest of Arequipa — one of the world's deepest canyons, with rims rising more than 1,000 m above the Colca River. The classic two-to-three-day route starts at the village of Cabanaconde (± 3,287 m), drops steeply to the canyon floor through several traditional hamlets, and overnights at the leafy Sangalle oasis with its natural pools before a steep climb of roughly 1,100 m back to the rim. Along the way trekkers often watch Andean condors soar from the Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint and pass pre-Inca agricultural terraces still in use. It is physically demanding because of the long climb out, yet requires no technical skills and can be done independently or with a guide.
Trail Highlights
