Description
The Chilkoot Trail is a historic 53 km (33-mile) route running from the abandoned townsite of Dyea in Alaska, over the 1,067 m Chilkoot Pass, to Bennett in British Columbia, Canada. It rose to fame during the Klondike Gold Rush (1896–1899) when thousands of prospectors hauled their supplies up the notorious 'Golden Stairs' toward the Yukon goldfields. Now protected as part of the Klondike Gold Rush International Historical Park, the 3–5 day trek crosses three contrasting climatic zones and is littered with gold-rush-era artefacts. A permit system caps daily hiker numbers to protect the trail and its designated campgrounds.
Trail Highlights
