Description
The Chadar Trek is a truly unique winter expedition in the Zanskar Valley, Ladakh — where trekkers walk on the completely frozen surface of the Zanskar River along approximately 105 km (round trip) from Chilling to the Nerak Waterfall and back. 'Chadar' is a Hindi word for blanket or sheet of ice, describing the 30–60 cm thick ice that covers the river when temperatures plunge to -35°C in January and February. A narrow gorge with limestone walls rising 600 m on either side creates a dramatic, otherworldly landscape. Historically this frozen corridor was the only winter lifeline for Zanskari communities to reach Leh for supplies and medical access. A standard itinerary takes 9–12 days including road travel from Leh and nights in insulated tents or natural wind-sheltered caves.
Trail Highlights
Walking on the frozen surface of the Zanskar River through limestone gorges 300–600 m high, the Nerak Waterfall frozen from top to bottom, camping in the natural Tibb Cave, witnessing the life of the Zanskar people in winter, and the traditional route that for centuries was the only winter corridor from the Zanskar Valley to Leh.
