Description
The Camino Primitivo, or 'Original Way,' is the oldest and most physically demanding of all the major Camino de Santiago routes. Beginning in the historic city of Oviedo, Asturias, it covers 321 km (199 miles) across the rugged Cantabrian Mountains and lush Galician forests before arriving at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. The route traces its origins to 814 AD, when King Alfonso II of Asturias became the first recorded pilgrim to travel from Oviedo to venerate the newly discovered remains of the Apostle James. Daily elevation gains frequently exceed 1,000 m, with a total ascent of 8,000–9,000 m, making it far more strenuous than the popular Camino Francés. Only about 5% of all Santiago pilgrims choose this route each year, keeping it refreshingly quiet while rewarding those who complete it with dramatic mountain scenery, ancient stone villages of Asturias, and a profound sense of walking in the footsteps of medieval pilgrims.
Trail Highlights
The oldest Camino de Santiago route (since 814 AD), passing through the green and rugged Cantabrian Mountains, the dense forests of Asturias, the San Salvador Cathedral of Oviedo as the starting point with its unique collection of sacred relics, the fertile valleys of Galicia, and ending at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela
