Description

The Camino Francés (French Way) is the world's most-walked long-distance pilgrimage route, stretching 780 km from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port at the foot of the French Pyrenees to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain. Pilgrims have walked this path since the Middle Ages; today more than 235,000 people complete the French Way each year, representing roughly 47% of all Camino pilgrims worldwide (2024 figures). The route crosses four Spanish regions — Navarra, La Rioja, Castilla y León, and Galicia — as landscapes shift from Pyrenean foothills and Rioja vineyards to the vast, meditative Castilian meseta and the lush green hills of Galicia. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, it is typically completed in 28–35 days, averaging around 22–25 km per day, and requires no technical climbing skills.

Trail Highlights

Crossing the Pyrenees from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (France) to Roncesvalles (Spain), passing through the historic cities of Pamplona, Logroño, Burgos, and León, walking the vast and meditative Castilian meseta, visiting Cruz de Ferro (1,504 m) where pilgrims leave a stone from home, climbing O Cebreiro into green Galicia, and ending at the Plaza del Obradoiro facing the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela
