Description
The Camino del Norte (Northern Way) is an 817 km Camino de Santiago route running along the northern coast of Spain from Irún on the French border to Santiago de Compostela. Following the ancient Roman road Via Agrippa, it served as a key medieval pilgrimage route when Moorish control made the southern roads dangerous. The walk passes through San Sebastián, Bilbao (with its Guggenheim museum), Santander, Gijón, and Ribadeo before heading inland to join the Camino Francés at Arzúa. Compared to the busier Camino Francés, this coastal route offers a quieter experience with dramatic Cantabrian Sea views, green cliffs, and authentic fishing villages.
Trail Highlights
The dramatic northern coastal trail of Spain along the Cantabrian Sea; historic cities such as San Sebastián, Bilbao, Santander, and Gijón; quieter than the Camino Francés; fishing villages and distinctive coastal cliffs
