Description
Alta Via 2—nicknamed the 'Alta Via delle Leggende' (High Route of the Legends)—is the most demanding hut-to-hut trek in Italy's Dolomites, running roughly 160 km from the medieval town of Bressanone (Brixen) in South Tyrol south to the foothills above Feltre. Over 10–15 days it threads the spectacular Puez-Odle, Sella, Marmolada and Pale di San Martino groups, crossing dozens of mountain passes while rarely dropping below 1,300 m. Its high point, Forcella Marmolada (~2,885 m), lies near the Dolomites' highest glaciated summit and can involve via ferrata and glacier travel—though alternatives exist. Far tougher and more technical than the more popular Alta Via 1, it demands mountain experience, a steady head on exposed terrain, and fitness for long consecutive days, with lodging and meals resting on the Dolomites' classic rifugio network.
