Description

The Ala-Kul Lake Trek is one of Kyrgyzstan's most popular multi-day hikes, linking the town of Karakol with the glacial Ala-Köl lake and the Altyn-Arashan hot springs in the Terskey Alatau range of the Tian Shan. Roughly 50 km long, it is usually completed in two to four days, with the crux day crossing the Ala-Kul Pass at 3,860 m over steep scree and lingering snow even in summer. The lake itself sits at 3,532 m — a turquoise, rock-dammed body of water about 2.8 km long. The route typically ascends the Karakol Valley, camps near the lake, and descends to the Altyn-Arashan hot springs. The best season runs from June to September when the trail is clear of snow.
