Yasushi Yamanoi

Japan

Japanese solo alpinist and the first Asian to receive the Piolet d'Or Lifetime Achievement award (2021), still climbing after losing ten digits.

Yasushi Yamanoi (山野井泰史, born 21 April 1965) is a Japanese alpinist who built his reputation on lightweight, self-funded solo ascents rather than corporate sponsorship. His record includes a winter solo of Fitz Roy (1990), a solo new route on the south-west face of Cho Oyu (1994), and K2 by the south-south-east ridge without supplemental oxygen in 2000. In 2002, descending the north face of Gyachung Kang with his wife and fellow climber Taeko, he was caught by a storm and avalanche and suffered severe frostbite — his ring and little fingers on both hands and all the toes of his right foot were amputated after four months in hospital. He continued alpine climbing, and in 2021 became the first Asian to receive the Piolet d'Or Lifetime Achievement award.
