CLIMBER
Wolfgang Güllich
Germany
The first person to climb a route graded 9a in the world — Action Directe, Frankenjura, Germany (1991) — and the inventor of the campus board training technique.
Wolfgang Güllich (24 October 1960 – 31 August 1992) was a German rock climber widely regarded as one of the most influential sport climbers in history. Throughout the 1980s he pushed the grade ceiling multiple times, culminating in the first ascent of Action Directe (9a/5.14d) at Frankenjura in 1991 — a standard that stood as the world's hardest route for nearly a decade. He also invented the campus board, now a universal training tool. Güllich died in a car accident at age 31.
