Walter Bonatti (1930–2011) was an Italian alpinist widely regarded as one of the greatest mountaineers of all time. He played a crucial role in the 1954 Italian K2 first ascent by carrying oxygen cylinders to 8,100 m overnight without a tent. His masterpiece was a solo new route on the Matterhorn's North Face in winter (February 1965), after which he immediately retired from professional climbing at age 35.
