Tim Macartney-Snape
Australia
The first Australian to climb Everest (1984) and the first person in the world to climb from sea level to the summit of Everest without external support (1990).
Timothy John Macartney-Snape AM (born 5 January 1956, Iringa, Tanzania) is an Australian mountaineer and adventurer. On 3 October 1984, he and Greg Mortimer became the first Australians to summit Mount Everest via a new route on the North Face, without supplemental oxygen. His defining achievement was the 1990 Sea to Summit expedition: he walked over 1,200 km solo from the Bay of Bengal (sea level) to the summit of Everest without Sherpa support or bottled oxygen — a world first. He later co-founded the global outdoor brand Sea to Summit, named after this expedition.
