Sue Fear

Australia

The first Australian-born woman to summit Everest via the Tibetan side; she died on Manaslu in 2006.

Susan Erica "Sue" Fear (18 March 1963 – 28 May 2006) was an Australian mountaineer who summited Mount Everest in 2003 via the North Col route on the Tibetan side, becoming the first Australian-born woman and the second Australian woman to do so. She climbed a string of 8,000-metre peaks: Cho Oyu (1998), Shishapangma (2002), Everest (2003), Gasherbrum II (2004) and Manaslu (2006). Fear died while descending from the summit of Manaslu after falling into a crevasse at around 7,400 m; her body remains on the mountain, in line with a wish she expressed during her lifetime. She received the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2005 for services to mountaineering and her work as a Fred Hollows Foundation ambassador, and was named the Australian Geographic Society's Adventurer of the Year for 2003. Her life is chronicled in "Fear No Boundary: The Road to Everest and Beyond" (2005), co-written with Lincoln Hall.
