Saray Khumalo

South Africa

The first Black African woman to reach the summit of Everest (2019) and to complete the Seven Summits; active in fundraising for children's literacy.

Saray Khumalo (born 1972 in Zambia, of Rwandan heritage and based in South Africa) is an explorer and business executive. In May 2019 she made history as the first black African woman to summit Mount Everest, after three earlier attempts foiled by an avalanche (2014), an earthquake (2015), and severe weather (2017). She completed the Seven Summits in 2023 with Mount Kosciuszko. Khumalo uses every climb to raise funds for libraries and children's education, including as an ambassador for the Nelson Mandela Libraries.
