Led the first South American expedition to the summit of Everest (1992) via the Kangshung Face; the only person to have climbed Everest from all three of its sides.

A Chilean mountaineer and academic who led the team that became the first South American expedition to reach the summit of Everest on 15 May 1992 via the extremely difficult Kangshung Face route. He later climbed Everest two more times via different routes, making him the only person to have conquered Everest from its south, east, and north sides.
