Peter Habeler (born 22 July 1942 in Mayrhofen, Austria) is an Austrian professional mountaineer who, with Reinhold Messner, summited Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen on 8 May 1978 — a breakthrough that transformed mountaineering. Before this historic achievement, medical experts believed human function at Everest's altitude without extra oxygen was impossible. Habeler is also noted for speed records on the Eiger and Matterhorn with Messner, and runs a renowned climbing school in Mayrhofen.
