A legendary Pakistani climber who climbed 8 of the 14 eight-thousanders; disappeared during the first attempt to climb K2 in winter without oxygen (February 2021) — declared a National Hero of Pakistan.
Muhammad Ali Sadpara (2 February 1976 – c. 5 February 2021) was a Pakistani mountaineer from the village of Sadpara near Skardu. He summited eight peaks above 8,000 m including Nanga Parbat, Gasherbrum I & II, and K2 in summer. In February 2021 he led a team attempting the first winter ascent of K2 without bottled oxygen, alongside Juan Pablo Mohr (Chile) and John Snorri (Iceland). All three disappeared above Camp 3; Sadpara's body was found in August 2021. The Government of Pakistan declared him a national hero. His son Sajid Sadpara, who survived the disaster after his regulator failed, is also a professional mountaineer.
