The first Malaysian to reach the summit of Mount Everest, on 23 May 1997.

Datuk M. Magendran (born Magendran M. Munisamy, 6 December 1963 in Kuala Lumpur) is a Malaysian mountaineer recognised as the first Malaysian to reach the summit of Mount Everest. He stepped onto the summit on 23 May 1997 at 11:55 a.m. local time via the South Col on the southeast ridge, followed a few minutes later by teammate N. Mohanadas at 12:10 p.m. Both were part of the "Malaysia-Everest Project 97", Malaysia's first Everest expedition, jointly organised by the Malaysia Mountaineering Association and the Ministry of Youth and Sports. For the achievement Magendran was conferred a Datukship by the Penang state government in 2010 and a federal Datukship by the King of Malaysia in June 2011.
