Lionel Terray (1921–1965) was a legendary French alpinist and member of the 1950 Annapurna expedition who played a major role in rescuing the summiteers. He led the first ascents of Makalu (1955) with Jean Couzy and Cerro Fitz Roy in Patagonia (1952), and wrote the memoir 'Conquistadors of the Useless'.
