Germany
German solo alpinist known for his attempts to climb Everest alone in winter, without supplemental oxygen or team support.
Jost Kobusch (born 3 August 1992 in Bielefeld) is a German alpinist and author known for solo climbing without supplemental oxygen. In 2014 he became the youngest person to solo Ama Dablam without oxygen, climbed Annapurna (8,091 m) without oxygen in 2016, and made the first ascent of Nangpai Gosum II (7,296 m) solo in 2017 — an achievement that earned him a Piolet d'Or nomination. He has twice attempted a solo winter Everest: via the standard route in 2019/2020 (turning back at 7,360 m) and via the West Ridge in 2021/2022, which was defeated by sustained bad weather. He is also widely known for filming the avalanche that partly destroyed Everest base camp during the Nepal earthquake of 25 April 2015.
