American climber-photographer who made the first ascent of Meru's "Shark's Fin" and won an Oscar for directing "Free Solo".

Born 12 October 1973, Jimmy Chin is an American mountain athlete, photographer, skier and film director who has been on The North Face athlete team for over two decades. In 2006 he made the first American ski descent from the summit of Mount Everest with Kit and Rob DesLauriers, and in 2011 he completed the first ascent of the "Shark's Fin" on India's Meru Peak with Conrad Anker and Renan Ozturk. With Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi he co-directed the documentaries Meru and Free Solo, the latter winning the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature; his photography book There and Back became a New York Times bestseller in 2021.
