CLIMBER

Jean-Christophe Lafaille

France

The finest French climber of his generation; climbed 11 of the 14 eight-thousanders including a solo of Makalu without oxygen (2001); disappeared during a solo winter ascent of Makalu (2006).

Jean-Christophe Lafaille (31 March 1965 – c. 26 January 2006) was a French professional mountaineer regarded as one of the greatest eight-thousanders specialists of his generation. His career was marked by a dramatic survival on Annapurna in 1992 after his partner Pierre Béghin fell — an experience that defined his mountaineering philosophy. He went on to summit 11 of the 14 eight-thousanders including a solo of Makalu without oxygen (2001), a solo winter ascent of Shishapangma (2002), and a solo of Manaslu (2004). Lafaille disappeared without trace in January 2006 during a solo winter attempt on Makalu.
