CLIMBER
James Kagambi
Kenya
First Kenyan to summit Everest (May 2022), the sole non-American member of the Full Circle team.
James Kagambi — known as KG — is a Kenyan climber and outdoor instructor who began as a primary school teacher for grades 4-7 from 1983 to 1987 before being recruited by NOLS in 1986 and completing a 90-day scholarship course as a certified instructor. He became the first Black African to summit Denali (6,190 m) on a 36-day expedition in 1989 and Aconcagua in 1994, and is now a senior NOLS instructor as well as owner of the Kenya-based guiding company Kagambi Mountain Exploration. In spring 2022, aged 62, he joined the Full Circle expedition — the first all-Black team to target Everest — as its only non-American member, after expedition leader Phil Henderson convinced him that his role as motivator and communicator mattered as much as physical strength.
