South Korean explorer and the first person to reach all "five poles": Everest, the North Pole, the South Pole, the Bering Strait and Greenland.

Hong Sung-taek (홍성택, born 13 March 1966) is a South Korean mountaineer, explorer and author supported by the National Geographic Explorers programme. He summited Everest in 1995, skied to the South Pole in 1994 and walked to the North Pole in 2005. He later crossed Greenland by dog sled in 2011 and crossed the Bering Strait on foot in 2012, making him the first person in the world to complete all five of these "poles". In 2019 he was featured in "Explorers: Amazing Tales of the World's Greatest Adventures", published by DK/Penguin Random House, alongside figures such as Roald Amundsen and Edmund Hillary.
