Salah satu pendiri Mapala UI dan sahabat Soe Hok Gie; selamat dari ekspedisi Semeru 1969 yang merenggut nyawa Gie dan Idhan Lubis.

Herman Lantang was an anthropology student at the University of Indonesia and one of the founders of Mapala UI, a student nature-lovers' organization that helped shape Indonesia's tradition of student mountaineering. He was a close friend of activist and writer Soe Hok Gie. During a December 1969 climb of Mount Semeru, Herman survived the incident that killed Soe Hok Gie and Idhan Lubis from toxic volcanic gas near the summit. His story became widely known again after the biographical film "Gie".
