English mountaineer (1886–1924) and icon of early Everest exploration. He participated in the first three British Everest expeditions (1921, 1922, 1924). In 1924 he and Andrew Irvine disappeared near the summit; their fate remains one of mountaineering's greatest mysteries. His body was found in 1999 at 8,156 m. His three-word answer to why he wanted to climb Everest — 'Because it's there' — became mountaineering's most famous quote.
